This from ex-firefighter Justin Plimmer, commenting on the Grenfell tragedy. Shared with permission:

“The one thing that really pissed me off while being a serving firefighter was when the government changed legislation around fire deaths.
If any of those poor people fighting for their lives die in hospital, they will not be counted in the government figures. Which means that when they say fire deaths are reducing, year on year, they are talking utter bollocks!! They have changed the goal posts to reduce funding in the emergency services. None of this was ever mentioned in the commons or the press. (Surprise) They did however decry our “golden” pensions and continually attack us. Reduced funding, co-responding, station closures and removal of fire engines and fire personnel to name but a few! We need a voice but the propaganda machine continues to whir!!!”

To those giving me shit for “politicising” this terrible event, it happened because of politics. It happened because of years of Tory policies putting profit before people, keeping the wealthy rich and ignoring the impact on and the voices of the poor. This is politics in action, politics killing people.

This is the borough which returned a Labour MP last week with an 11% swing from the Tories, their first Labour MP for more than 40 years. This community was already angry and demanding change, imagine how they feel now with this needless and shameful loss of life. I guess that’s why the PM chose to not meet residents when she visited this morning.

Whichever party you choose to support and for whatever reasons, please understand and accept responsibility for how policies impact our society as a whole.

12 months ago, 52% of people voted for Brexit. A result which, we have been told, we have to accept for the good of democracy and to maintain public confidence in the democratic process.

2 months ago, the Prime Minister claimed she did not have a mandate to negotiate Brexit with her narrow majority. So she called a general election specifically to “strengthen her mandate in Brexit negotiations” and as a vote of confidence in her party’s policies.

On Thursday, at the election she called specifically for the public to endorse her and approve her policies, the Prime Minister lost her party’s parliamentary majority and her “mandate to negotiate” was rejected by a large majority of voters.

A progressive coalition to take the country forward has been proposed encompassing over 52% of the vote. The precise number which we were told had to be respected on Brexit for “confidence in democracy to be maintained”.

Theresa May specifically asked the public to approve her vision for Brexit and it has been comprehensively rejected. Theresa May and a Tory/DUP coalition have been rejected and must stand aside. It is a perversion of democracy to argue otherwise!

You can’t have it both ways Theresa!
