Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK today!)

I think MPs might have just shot themselves in the foot.

Because they’ve decided that Sodexo – the private French company which supervises 150,000 medium and low-risk offenders on probation each year – can make nearly 34% of probation officers redundant and replace them with ATM-style electronic kiosks.

Surely if important jobs like keeping track of offenders can be done by machine – people who just turn up occasionally and mindlessly vote in parliament exactly how they’re told to vote by their party bosses can be replaced by machine too?

And just think. It’ll save the taxpayer £498.4m a year in running costs for parliament, not to mention the £98.1 million MPs cost us in expenses every year, plus the massive costs of their salaries and pensions.

And while we’re at it, we could also replace peers in the House of Lords with machines.

After all…

Pride's Purge

(satire?)

A massive crackdown on workshy Liberal Democrat politicians – who under the present government have been used to living a life of luxury doing nothing at all at taxpayer’s expense – will be a central part of Labour’s election manifesto.

The tough new rules are designed to curb the something-for-nothing culture which experts say has become endemic amongst Liberal Democrats over the past 5 years.

Soon to be unemployed Liberal Democrat MPs will be stripped of their state benefits – including an end to tax-payer-funded chauffeur-driven ministerial cars and massive ministerial expense accounts – when huge numbers of them are made redundant after the next election, according to sources close to Labour leader Ed Miliband.

A spokesperson for Labour said they would also be shortly announcing a manifesto pledge to introduce a new US-style ‘work for the dole’ scheme for workshy Liberal Democrats such as Nick Clegg and Danny Alexander – who will be…

Pride's Purge

(satire?)

A spine-chilling photograph of a ghost has been discovered which appears to show the face of a woman reflected in the door of number 10 Downing street.

The eerie image was captured while David Cameron announced the start of the election campaign to press photographers outside the prime minister’s residence:

cameron rayner

If the picture is enlarged, the face of a woman can be clearly seen on the door of number 10:

cameron rayner 1

If the picture is enlarged further the face becomes clearer:

cameron rayner 2

It looks a lot like agony aunt and NHS campaigner Claire Rayner who died at the age of 79 in 2010:

Raynor cameron 4

Now why on earth would Clare Rayner be haunting David Cameron*?

.

*Clare Rayner’s last words before she died were: ‘tell Cameron if he screws up my beloved NHS I’ll haunt him’.

TheCritique Archives

by Martin Odoni

Everyone’s favourite purveyor of reality-independent fiction, Iain Duncan Smith, Work & Pensions Secretary, was today on The Andrew Marr Conservative Party Propaganda Echo Chamber… er, I mean, The Andrew Marr Show. Characteristically, IDS simply went and declared an outright reversal of the plainest facts, when just moments into the interview, he announced, “homelessness has not risen”.

Now it is thoroughly typical of BBC News programmes that Marr made the exceptionally-rigorous attempt to cross-examine this assertion by responding, “Okay.”

ANOTHER IDS LIE

But this is not so much an analysis of the BBC habitually reporting Conservative Party falsehoods as facts, so we’ll let Marr get away with it for now. Instead, let us analyse the suggestion that homelessness has not risen during the current Government. I have no doubt that most people were scratching their chins and muttering, “Oh-sure-Jimmy-Hill…” as soon as they heard it anyway, so it…

Benefit tales

Charities yesterday condemned as “very worrying” any move by a re-elected Conservative government to target the disabled

after a leak suggested senior Tories were preparing to tax their benefits in a future cuts programme.

Campaigners accused ministers of fiscal short-sightedness after proposals drawn up by civil servants to deliver Chancellor George Osborne’s commitment  to cut £12bn from the welfare budget by 2017-18 revealed plans to raise £1.5bn by clawing back a slice of key disability payments.

The leaked document, obtained by the BBC, detailed plans to impose taxes on the disability living allowance, personal independence payments and attendance allowance, paid to over-65s with personal care needs.

Charities said the disabled, including those suffering mental illness, had already shouldered a heavy burden from cuts brought in by the Coalition and further cuts would disproportionately target the most vulnerable.

Ridiculous…

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK today!)

Cameron and Clegg’s stupidest policy?

Introducing formal testing and grading in schools for 4 -year olds.

I mean – have any government ministers actually ever spoken to a 4-year old?

When this hairbrained policy was first proposed in 2013, I wrote about the breathtaking stupidity of it then:

Plans to test 4-year-olds is not the coalition’s worst policy – but it’s their stupidest

And now the policy has started being implemented – we have proof from teachers that not only is it a very very very stupid idea – it’s actually endangering the education of our children:

Baseline tests will damage our children’s learning

I’ve got a much better idea than testing 4-year-olds.

Perhaps we should introduce more rigorous, formal testing of prospective government ministers before we allow them to get their hands on our children’s education?
